Interfaith Work

YLJC plays an active role in York Interfaith Group (YIG). We also invite members of other faith groups to our services and events on a fairly regular basis.  Sarah Hubbard is currently the committee member who works alongside the Rabbi and other committee members to develop and strengthen YLJC’s engagement with the city’s faith communities. This work ties closely in with Y LJC’s core values. In recent months interfaith work has become even more important and we were delighted to join our Interfaith friends from at a peace vigil held in November at York Minster.

Reflections from the Rabbi on the Leeds Iftar

Wednesday 5th March 2025

Last night I was so privileged to be invited to the Iftar dinner at the Leeds City Hall. The company was excellent, and we were seated at a table with some other York denizens, lovely to meet them. The most impressive parts of a very delightful event were the speeches of the youth, most particularly a young lady of 12 who sang verses of the Koran and spoke to us about the meaning of Ramadan to herself and her family. She exhorted us to take the spirit of peace and love into our everyday lives as well. We were all so impressed with the poise and articulate nature of her discourse! After the youth and so many well-deserved thanks, the Imam led us in blessing and we shared an excellent curry dinner, with proper chai afterwards. SO grateful to my York Interfaith colleagues for their support.

We are delighted that York Liberal Jewish Community won second place in the Movement for Progressive Judaism Awards for its Tikkun Olam(Hebrew: תִּיקּוּן עוֹלָם) work, which is a Jewish concept that translates to “repairing the world”. In YLJC we have put all our social justice and interfaith work under this umbrella. We feel that ‘repairing the world’ is a shared activity, enacted through communities and by working across faiths, and with all who share our desire for justice and peace. We know that many of you have supported our interfaith work over the year and we value your support highly. Tikkun Olam is at the centre of our culture in YLJC.
