In the last years of Cheder, children join the B’nai Mitzvah Cohort (BMC) and begin to learn to read, speak and understand Hebrew. We have found that learning a useful vocabulary makes it easier to learn prayers and Torah reading. We are always open to modifications to suit a particular child. Preparation for the Bat or Bar Mitzvah celebration should start 2 years in advance so there is accumulated knowledge and no stress in learning. This class has special field trips as well, to broaden Jewish understanding and to cement friendships. Our BMC handbook can be found here.
Tikkun Initiative
In the years after leaving the BMC, we offer leadership training in the form of the Tikkun Initiative (TI). This programme, based on the work of the Jewish Teen Foundation, invites young people to choose and deepen their understanding of a different social issue each year, such as homelessness, domestic violence, or refugees. To address what they determine as the need for assistance in their chosen arena, TI participants invite grant proposals from non-profit groups working in the chosen area, review and fund them while also taking part in connected activities.
