On Sunday 12th August, our member, Dena Sarhang held a wonderful demonstration of Middle Eastern cookery on behalf of the community raising over £100 for Warchild, a charity working with lone child refugees.
Attended by over two dozen members and friends, Dena showed us all how to cook a wide variety of dishes including the Taboula, Dolma, Baba Ganug and delicious Iraqi-style Baklava (see pictures below). If you would like to try to recreate her recipes you can view Dena’s recipes here.
Dena came to York from Northern Iraq in 2013 together with her husband Sinan who was a student at the university. After he graduated – after a major campaign by the community and others – they and their two children, Yara and Lisa, were finally granted leave to remain in UK.
As an active member of the Jewish community Dena has become renowned for her amazing contributions to our bring-and-share lunches and this was her “thank you” to the community
