Saturday 16th December: Next York Shabbat Morning Service including York’s first B’nei Mitzvah for half a century

Our next Shabbat morning service in York will be held on Saturday 16th December and will led by Rabbi Charley Baginsky together with our Student Rabbi for 5778, Gabriel Webber.

Gabriel Webber and guests at the Civic Service 2017

This is a very special occasion for our community, as the service will incorporate our very first B’nei Mitzvah (the gender neutral version of a Bat Mitzvah) – for Esther van der Bos – and the first Jewish coming of age ceremony in York for at least half a century

The service will begin at 11am at the Friargate Meeting House and will be proceeded by our cheder session for 5-13 year olds, starting promptly at 10am and run by Lauren Keiles and Orly Askew.

The service will be followed by our usual bring-and-share veggie lunch.  Please do bring a nice contribution for Esther.  For information on what food to bring please click here.

Following the service, at 2.30pm there will be a brief event with Rabbi Baginsky at Fulford Cemetery to consecrate the new Jewish burial plot that YLJC has secured there.

This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first Jewish cemetery in the City since medieval times.  If you would like a lift down to the cemetery please speak to one of the committee members after the service.
