York Liberal Jewish Community yesterday (Saturday 8th November) celebrated the birth of its newest member, two month old Samara McGuirk, as part of its November Shabbat morning service at the Friargate Friends Meeting House.
Conducted by Rabbi Danny Rich, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism and York Liberal Jewish Community’s visiting Rabbi, the short ceremony was attended by nearly fifty other members of the new community which was founded less than six months ago. The baby-naming will certainly be the first in the City since York’s Hebrew Jewish Congregation in Aldwark closed in 1975 and probably for at least a decade before that.
Samara Alexandra is daughter to Yasmin King and Justin McGuirk from neighbouring Scarborough and sibling to brother Zach, 7, and sister Tzofiya, 2.
Mother, Yasmin King, a founding member of the new community, adds:
“This was really special and we feel blessed to be part of the evolving York Jewish community. I want everyone to know that York has a thriving Jewish community again!”
