York’s Liberal Jewish community was founded by a number of York Jewish residents who recognised an increasing demand for more Jewish activities in the City.  See our welcome film here welcome to York Liberal Jewish Community

Acknowledging that those Jews living in around York were unlikely to be traditionally observant (the nearest synagogue is 20 miles away in Leeds), the founders decided to align themselves with Liberal Judaism, attracted by the movement’s commitment to:

We recognise as Jewish anyone who fulfils Liberal Judaism’s (ULPS) criteria for Jewish status, which accepts both matrilineal and patrilineal descent equally

We invite men and women to participate equally in all we do and to sit together in services

We welcome all-comers to our services and in particular families with mixed faith backgrounds interested in exploring their Judaism. Our services are short, child-friendly and largely in English

Social Justice:

We are inspired by the prophets who understood the Jewish responsibility was first and foremost not to ritual but to promoting justice, whether through our involvement in Mitzvah Day (www.mitzvahday.org.uk) or support for York Foodbank http://york.foodbank.org.uk
